Letter from Yong Atchew to Warren Hastings, 1782


Yong Atchew is generally considered to be the person responsible for the establishment of the Chinese community in India. This fascinating document from the archives is a letter/petition written by Yong Atchew to the then Gov. Gen. Warren Hastings seeking his permission and assistance to set up a sugar factory. The ornate handwriting and language seems to suggest that an expert scribe must have been hired to write this important letter
